Yong believes that quality starts with understanding and communication. Good, comprehensive communication happens, when you can explain your view in at least two ways: One with tech related vocabulary, so your peers know what is going on, and at least one way of visualising and explaining things without the tech context. This is how we ensure Agility by being able to communicate and bring a message across to all kinds of stake holders.
Yong has also been on the path of mentoring and coaching for a while and has a threshold: Only if I am confident in explaining what I mean to my primary school aged daughter, I am truly confident in my topic.
This is in no means having to do with Yong’s expectations on the people she works with, it is an expectation she has for herself to ensure her own understanding.
The Eruption Types of Tech Debts
“A volcano is a rupture in the crust of a planetary-mass object, such as Earth, that allows hot lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface.” – Wikipedia
Now replace the following words in above statement:
Volcano = Tech Debt, Earth = Code/Product, Hot Lava = Defects/Risks, Volcanic Ash = Code Smells and Gases = Disruptions.
Let’s talk about similarities between volcanos and tech debt. How do they pile up and what not to do.
